Can I Eat a Fishman?

A druid, a wizard, a ranger, and a guardian descended into the dark so a quiet little town called Elmore could sleep safely. The caves had other ideas.

The Party

Four unlikely souls, each carrying their own scars and secrets, who found something rare in the underground dark: each other.

J

Juniper Saltflower

Druid Mixed Seaborne

A circus escapee who speaks to beasts — and becomes them. Juniper shattered the dark lantern that kept Aldous Morvain's creatures captive, fled into the wider world, and found her way underground. The caves know her scent. So does someone from her past.

Played by Carrie
M

Multivox

Wizard Ridgeborne Giant

A mountain shepherd who watched his flock die to a monster he couldn't stop — and decided magic was the answer. Enormous, arcane, and surprisingly domestic, Mul is haunted by a recurring dream of a mossy stone door with a forlorn face carved into it. He also successfully started a sourdough during downtime.

Played by Jay
N

Norin Takarios

Ranger Wanderborne Katari

A cat-person ranger sworn to one day hunt down the Wavylay — a terrible bird that devastated his community. Until that day, he hones his craft on whatever the caves put in front of him. Sharp ears, sharper arrows, and a personal arsenal of gimmick ammunition including the legendary sticky arrow.

Played by Patrick
K

Kai

Guardian Slyborne Infernis

A tiefling guardian who failed to protect a mentor once, and swore it would never happen again. Kai fights with a pitchfork and an unbreakable will, interposing between the party and whatever the caves throw at them. When the Plateau of Thin Veils collapsed, Kai carried Juniper out.

Played by Krystal

The Story

Twelve sessions across nine months. A ghost scorpion hunt that turned into something far stranger.

I
Sessions 1–3

Descent & Recruitment

Four strangers arrive in Elmore and accept a simple-sounding job: descend into the Plover Caves and return with ghost scorpion venom. Simple enough — except that the caves are a living, breathing world unto themselves. After fighting through beetle swarms and psychic rats, the party earns an official adventuring charter in the underground settlement of Giantcap Grotto as "Can I Eat a Fishman?" — and celebrates with the most legendary meal any of them have ever cooked.

II
Sessions 4–6

Preparation & Crafting

Ghost scorpions can phase between reality and the ethereal — ordinary weapons pass right through them. The solution lies to the north, in the Ethereal Hunting Grounds, where phase lynxes stalk prey across the boundary of worlds. The party hunts them, survives a temporal anomaly that traps Norin in a six-second loop, and spends a delightful afternoon with the alchemist Sarsaparilla Amarilla brewing six precious doses of ghost touch elixir. They depart for the Jasmine Reaches properly armed.

III
Sessions 7–10

The Hunt

The Jasmine Reaches smell of flowers and taste of danger. The party systematically works through the ghost scorpion population — scouting territory, dismantling brood nurseries, surviving hatchling swarms, recovering at Brynna Stonefallow's Rocking Ranch. Their hunt tracker climbs steadily toward twelve, but the alpha remains elusive, and the territorial markers it leaves behind are unlike anything Silviana Starweaver described. Something larger is happening here.

IV
Sessions 11–12

Truth Revealed & The Plateau

Observation Post Delta changes everything. An abandoned research station from an organization calling itself the Severance Institute — full of temporal equipment, locked files, and a researcher named Professor Kellan, frozen mid-scream in a six-second loop he can never finish. The alpha isn't just a large scorpion. It's a time-eater, Sigma-class, catalogued and studied. Armed with this knowledge, the party climbs to the Plateau of Thin Veils, springs their ambush, and fights through four brutal phases — culminating in Juniper's hyena-form teeth shattering the phase shell, Kai refusing to let anyone die, and Mul's spell rupturing the tail before the plateau folds into a rift. They walk out with the venom. Elmore is safe.

The Session Log

All twelve sessions of Season One, from the first beetle fight to the finale on the Plateau of Thin Veils.

The party meets in Elmore and receives their mission from Carot: descend into the Plover Caves and return with ghost scorpion venom. They ride the ramshackle elevator operated by Vinnie the Winch down into the Giantcap Grotto and immediately encounter three beetle creatures with rending claws and silk-fishing tactics. Juniper vaults the cavern walls with her boat hook; Mul fills the chamber with fiery tornados. The party harvests their first ingredients and pays Vinnie his toll in beetle leg.

First Session Combat: Beetles ×3 Loot: Beetle Legs · Silk Strands NPC: Carot · Vinnie the Winch

The party explores Giantcap Grotto — a bioluminescent underground settlement run by a fungrile mayor named Malk — and picks up their first official job from Feldspar, a deep gnome grain processor whose root warden facility has a rat problem. The cranial rats are dog-sized, expose their glowing brains to the open air, and hit psychically. After defeating five of them (including the alpha), the party learns the settlement's runic wards are failing, monsters are escaping, and an ancient organization called The Riven is the only thing standing between the grotto and collapse. Feldspar offers them a feast.

Combat: Cranial Rats ×5 Loot: Brain Matter · Alpha Brain Essence NPC: Mayor Malk · Feldspar · Silviana Starweaver · Marga

The party is officially chartered by Mayor Malk as "Can I Eat a Fishman?" at Malk Manor. They spend the day gathering intel: Iron Tooth Marga sells them a Jasmine Reaches map for two handfuls of gold; Silviana Starweaver explains ghost scorpion anatomy and the need for phase lynx essence; Sarsaparilla Amarilla explains exactly how to process that essence. Then they cook. The Brain Dumpling Feast — rat brains, beetle egg, silk strands — produces a 44-point heal on double natural 20s. Full party recovery. Maximum hope. An absolute triumph.

★ Legendary Feast — 44 HP Charter Granted NPC: Malk · Marga · Silviana · Sarsaparilla · Debbie Duggles

The party travels north into the Ethereal Hunting Grounds, a region where reality thins and the phase lynx hunt across the boundary of worlds. They fight a female lynx first, then track the male back to its lair. The lair yields more than just essence: an ornate golden bracer and a mysterious leather-bound field journal bearing a watermark the party won't fully understand until Session 11. The phase flanks shimmer between solid and translucent on the cook-fire — a genuinely strange meal.

Combat: Phase Lynx ×2 Loot: Lynx Essence · Pelt · Fangs · Phase Flanks · Golden Bracer Mystery: Leather-Bound Journal

Returning from the Ethereal Hunting Grounds, Norin walks through a temporal anomaly and spends the next several minutes trapped in a six-second repeating loop — no memory of it afterward. Back in Giantcap Grotto, Sarsaparilla Amarilla vibrates with caffeinated enthusiasm as she guides the party through a four-phase alchemical process: Extraction → Stabilization → Refinement → Binding. Six doses of ghost touch elixir. In a brief encounter, the party glimpses Ward — a nine-foot Riven with obsidian talons inscribed with golden script — who has almost nothing to say but gifts Juniper a soccer-ball-sized stone spider familiar with a pulsing blue rune.

Crafted: 6× Ghost Touch Elixir NPC: Ward (Riven Warder) Gift: Stone Spider Familiar Event: Temporal Loop — Norin

A gear-up session at Cortland's Trading Post, where the dwarf proprietor cheerfully admits he has no idea where anything is (his assistant Marble handles that at terrifying speed). Tortoise Fletcher, an ancient tortoise who crafts fungus-wood recurve bows strung with cave fisher filament, is available for custom orders. The party receives a warning about bandits in the Jasmine Reaches — Pesci the Cat and Stern Daniel the Infernus, leaving a trail of charred caravans. Ward's stone spider familiar, now warmly settled with Juniper, is ready for the road.

NPC: Cortland · Marble · Slate · Tortoise Fletcher Warning: Pesci the Cat · Stern Daniel Departure for Jasmine Reaches

The party departs Giantcap Grotto and enters the Jasmine Reaches for the first time. The smell hits before the cavern opens up — jasmine, warm and disorienting, rising from fields of cave flowers. Ghost scorpions are active here, phasing in and out of visibility. The ghost touch elixir works. The hunt tracker begins to climb as the party scouts territory, identifies patrol routes, and learns the rhythms of the ghost scorpion population. Their reputation from Giantcap Grotto follows them — they know what they're doing now.

Hunt Tracker: Advancing Location: The Jasmine Reaches

The party pushes further into the cave system, clearing scorpion territory and gathering intel on the alpha's range. The hunt is methodical now — each encounter deliberately chosen, each harvest carefully managed. They begin to notice the territorial markers left by the alpha: pheromone traces and environmental damage that doesn't match what Silviana Starweaver described. Something in these caves operates on a different scale.

Hunt Tracker: Advancing Discovery: Unusual Alpha Markers

The party descends into a cracked caldera with unstable ground, salty reddish pools, and the unmistakable smell of a brood nursery. Three ghost scorpion broodmothers wait inside, physically heavier than the smaller scorpions and harder to force into material form. When they die, hatchling swarms erupt from the fissures. Juniper fights in scorpion form, Kai tanks the swarms with Unstoppable, Norin pins enemies with sticky arrows. Juniper is driven to zero hit points and chooses unconsciousness over a scar — carried to safety and recovered at Brynna Stonefallow's Rocking Ranch, where the proprietor's gnomish prosthetic arm and no-nonsense demeanor are a welcome sight. Hunt tracker: 7 of 12.

Combat: 3 Broodmothers + Hatchling Swarms Juniper: 0 HP (survived) Recovery: Rocking Ranch Hunt Tracker: 7 / 12

The hunt continues. The party tracks the alpha across its patrol range — through the Echoing Ribcage, along the Plateau of Thin Veils' lower approaches. The hunt tracker continues to climb. Each encounter adds data: how the alpha phases, how long it remains material, where it returns. The Severance Institute journal from Session 4 starts to make more sense in retrospect, though none of them can read its technical notation yet. They are getting close.

Hunt Tracker: Advancing Location: Echoing Ribcage · Plateau Approaches

The party finds it: Observation Post Delta, an abandoned research station bearing a compass rose with a doubled ouroboros as northern needle — the Severance Institute mark that matches the journal from Session 4. Inside, past brass scanning cylinders and a copper-tasting corridor, they find bunk rooms, a main lab, a vivisection room containing a standard ghost scorpion specimen. In the records alcove: a photograph of three researchers — Professor Marcus Kellan, Dr. Elena Voss, Researcher Finn Bridgewater. Kellan himself stands in the lab, mid-scream, frozen in a temporal loop he cannot escape. Mul's Mending Touch repairs the crystal relay array; the Bridgewater Field Log and Kellan's tablet fall out of the data. The alpha is P-7, Sigma-class. 400–600 kilograms. Full phase events lasting 2.3 seconds. And on the vivisection room wall, in someone's handwriting: "It doesn't eat flesh. It eats the time we have left." Hunt tracker: 13 of 12.

Hunt Tracker: 13 / 12 — Complete Discovery: Severance Institute NPC: Prof. Kellan (temporal loop) Intel: Alpha P-7 / Sigma-Class

The Plateau of Thin Veils: a blasted mesa of branching lightning, afterimages, and floating globules of unreality where the alpha waits. The party springs their ambush — ghost touch oil on weapons, high ground, the full benefit of four sessions of preparation — and four brutal phases follow: initial ambush, phasing combat as the alpha vanishes and attacks echoes, shell break as Juniper's hyena-form teeth shatter its phase carapace, and second form as a living siege engine fully material and furious. Juniper is driven to the edge of death. Kai refuses to let it end there. Mul ruptures the damaged tail with a final spell as the plateau itself begins to fold into a rift. They run. Kai carries Juniper. Mul grabs the tail. All four make it out as reality collapses behind them. They walk the long road back through Giantcap Grotto — where familiar faces stare at the enormous severed tail — and emerge into Elmore's daylight after a week underground. Carot processes the alpha venom into a protective perimeter. During two weeks of downtime, Deputy Debbie Duggles arrives with a flyer for something called Aldous Morvain's Traveling Menagerie of Marvels. Juniper goes very still.

Upper Caverns

Plover Caves

The entrance to another world: a sharp decline path, a limestone pillar marked with claw marks eight feet up, and a ramshackle elevator operated by Vinnie the Winch. The smell hits before your eyes adjust.

Settlement

Giantcap Grotto

A thriving underground settlement lit by bioluminescent mushrooms, time tracked by color-cycling cavern walls. Home to Deep Cuts Butcher, the Sanctum Caps Inn, Cortland's Trading Post, Bloom & Spore alchemy, and the party's official adventuring charter. Base of operations for Season One.

Ethereal Hunting Grounds — a cave where reality grows thin
Ethereal

Ethereal Hunting Grounds

North of Giantcap Grotto, where reality develops thin spots and phase lynxes hunt across the boundary of worlds. Temporal anomalies are common — Norin was stuck in a six-second loop here. The lair holds more than just prey.

The Jasmine Reaches — a vast cave perfumed with jasmine fields
Southern Depths

The Jasmine Reaches

A vast open cavern perfumed with jasmine fields — pleasant until you remember what lives here. Ghost scorpion territory: thermal vents, unstable floor sections, reddish mineral pools, and a Sigma-class alpha that patrols the Plateau of Thin Veils every six to eight hours.

Plateau of Thin Veils — a shattered stone mesa where reality fractures
Boss Arena

Plateau of Thin Veils

A blasted mesa where reality doesn't hold still — branching lightning, floating globules of unreality, temporal echoes, and a broken arch engraved with Ward-like runes. The place where Old Clitter-Clack was finally made to hold still. It doesn't exist the same way anymore.

The Beast Feast

In Daggerheart's Beast Feast system, every defeated creature becomes a potential meal. The party harvests monster parts, each with a flavor profile that determines which dice you roll: then you cook collaboratively, matching dice values to build a meal rating, and the feast heals the whole party. Death feeds life. The table feeds the table.

Can I Eat a Fishman? turned this from a recovery mechanic into a signature identity. They kept a shared cookbook. They argued about seasoning. They rolled double natural 20s and produced something that will be talked about for a long time.
